ISAAC STERN

Violinist Isaac Stern passed away at 81, of heart failure, on Saturday in a NY hospital. He was tireless as an superb interpreter, teacher, promoter of talented artists and human rights advocate. Stern was born in July 21, 1920 in Ukraine, and the following year the family settled in San Francisco, where he started his musical education. He made his Carnegie Hall debut in 1943, and in 1960 led the efforts to save it from being demolished by organizing a Citizen's Committee.

Isaac Stern encouraged and opened doors for artists like Itzhak Perlman, Yo Yo Ma,Pinchas Zuckerman, Emanuel Ax, Shlomo Mintz, Cho-Liang Lin and Yefim Bronfman.
