Bikel, Theodore (born May 2, 1924, in Vienna, Austria). Singer. He settled in Palestine in 1938 and the United States in 1954. A well-known actor, he is also a remarkable scholar, linguist, and singer. He collected folksongs in various languages and published some of them with comments in the book Folksongs and Footnotes (1960). Bikel has appeared in America and elsewhere since 1955, and he has sung many times on radio and TV. His albums include Bravo Bikel (1959), Folk Songs from Just About Everywhere (1959), and From Bondage to Freedom (1961). Bikel was the original Captain Georg Von Trapp in Rodgers and Hammerstein's Broadway musical The Sound of Music in 1959. He has starred as Tevye in numerous productions of Bock and Harnick's Fiddler on the Roof and as Mayer Rothschild in Bock and Harnick's The Rothschilds.
